Instructions

Note:  If you would like to use 2 strands of a worsted yarn held together instead of a super bulky yarn, cast on the number of stitches for the next bigger size than the target size.  Knit for the height of the actual size you want, and then finish the hat by working through the rounds as indicated according to the cast-on number.  For example, to make an average  newborn size hat with 2 strands of worsted yarn, cast on 36 stitches, knit 5 inches, then start the first decrease round by doing *K2tog, knit 4 stitches*, repeat around, etc.
Cast on 30 (36) (42) (48) (54) stitches, and knit one row.
Place a marker on the right hand needle (a loop of knotted yarn or a ring), join and knit about 5 (5½) (6) (6½) (7) inches.
Decrease rounds are next.  Start where indicated according to size, and then work through all the rest of the rounds.
Adult size start here: *K2tog, knit 7*, repeat around.  (48 stitches remaining)  Knit one round.
Youth size start here: *K2tog, knit 6*, repeat around.  (42 stitches remaining)  Knit one round.
Toddler size start here: *K2tog, knit 5*, repeat around.  (36 stitches remaining)  Knit one round.
6 to 12 months size start here: *K2tog, knit 4*, repeat around.  (30 stitches remaining)  Knit one round.
Newborn to 6 months size start here: *K2tog, knit 3*, repeat around.  (24 stitches remaining)  Knit one round.
*K2tog, knit 2*, repeat around.  (18 stitches remaining)  Knit one round.
*K2tog, knit 1*, repeat around.  (12 stitches remaining)
Change to green yarn.  K2tog, repeat around.  (6 stitches remaining)
Knit 4 rounds.  Bind off.
Cut the yarn, and fasten off.  Thread your yarn sewing needle with this tail, and pass it through the bump of the first bound off stitch, and then through the stem for a few inches, and cut the end.  Weave in the other ends.

Optional Curlicue
Cast on 30 stitches loosely.  Bind off in k2tog.  OR, a little wider:
Cast on 15 stitches loosely. Kfb across. (30 stitches remaining)  Bind off purlwise.  Sew to the base of the stem.
